Is using Grammarly for my assignments a violation of academic honesty?
Answer
It depends on the course and the specific learning outcomes. In most classes at Las Positas College, using Grammarly to check for grammar, spelling, and clarity is not considered a violation of academic honesty. Grammarly functions as a writing support tool, much like a spell-checker, and can help you refine your work without replacing your original thought.
However, using Grammarly might conflict with the learning objectives in some courses—such as those focused on English grammar or writing mechanics. If an assignment aims to demonstrate your understanding of grammar and sentence structure, relying on Grammarly’s suggestions could be considered inappropriate.
Regardless of the course, it’s important to use Grammarly ethically:
- You should still engage with the writing process and understand your changes (Grammarly will make some really off suggestions if you don't pay attention).
- Grammarly should enhance your writing, not replace your own learning and effort.
- Always follow your instructor’s guidelines regarding writing assistance tools.
Note: Currently, LPC does not have Grammarly’s generative AI features enabled for students, so Grammarly will not generate content for you—only suggestions for improvement.
The best thing to do is check with your instructor if you are unsure whether using Grammarly aligns with the expectations of a particular assignment or course. Tip: If you need writing support, the RAW Center is a great resource!
